Who am I?

I have spent 11 years of study in the University of Science & Technology of China (USTC) since September 1988. I have got my master & MPhil Degree in USTC at 1993 & 1996 respectively. In USTC, maybe the most competitive university in China, undergraduate student spent their first three years concentrating on extensive fundamental subjects, such as mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry, philosophy, politics and English. This kind of training gave me a solid background for further specialized study. I devoted most of my time to Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, including Elasticity, Plasticity, Fluid Mechanics, Vibration Theory, Dynamics of Explosion and its application, Computational Mechanics, etc. I am proud to see that my continuous hard work is fruitful: most of my major coursers got A(for a score over 85 under a full grade of 100). My major courses GPA is over 3.6 under 4.0 scale. In my spare time, I chose Management of Business as my minor study, in which all of my courses got A. Because of my excellence in my study, I got Outstanding Undergraduate Student Fellowship. Out of class, I took part in research work in the Laboratory of Mechanical Behaviors of Materials, studying mechanical behaviors of all kinds of new materials using SHPB(Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar), SHTB(Split Hopkinson Torsion Bar), MTS(Material Testing Star)and High-speed Photograph. At the end of my undergraduate study, I entered Laboratory of Impact Dynamics. Under the instruction of Professor Jilin Yu, a famous doctor in our department, I did some experimental research of Dynamic Photoelasticity & Caustics. Additionally, I did some job in theoretical analysis and computation, mainly in finite element method. The laboratory work has given me a good chance to apply what I learned to practical problems and improve my experience in research. During the passed academic year while I performed as a first-year graduate student, I specialized in the subjects of Solid Mechanics. My graduate curriculum included Advanced Continuum Mechanics, Material Dynamics, Shock Induced Phase-transformation, One-Dimension Unsteady Flow, Computational Mechanics, and Impact of Structure. My graduate coursesGPA is 3.8/4.0, ranking upper 5% or above in our class. At the same time, I have participated in the research on Structure Dynamics. After I finished my courses study, I went to China Academy of Engineering Physics as a research assistant, analyzing concrete structure using commercial program ABAQUS. As for my English proficiency, I have made many efforts learning English ever since in high school. In USTC, a school with a superior environment for English learning, I have gotten adequate exercises in both reading and writing. In spoken English class, my foreign English teacher Miss. Anita sang very high praise for my oral English. I have also taken an advanced oral English course (Arranged for the top graduate students by foreign department). In this class, I can communicate with my teacher, Mr. Shirker fluently. I have taken GRE in April this year and TOEFL in May last year and obtained satisfactory scores. I think that I will be well qualified to study in the United States. Reason for Wanting to Go On Graduate Study at____________ Mechanical Engineering is the application of the principals of Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Material Science to human problems. It is a subject with a long history while technological development and new theories constantly taking place, to become an expert in this field, one must continuously obtain new knowledge and improve his experience. And to give full play to ones potential, one need a superior research environment. So I am eagerly wanting to go on graduate study in an outstanding institute. ___________is the ideal place for every student in science, engineering and humanities all of the world. _________ can offer me limitless resources, incomparable experiments' instruments and abundant computing facilities for study and research. The program offered by the Department of _________ is closely related to my major, especially the program of_________ , about which I think I have much knowledge and work experience. My Fields of Interest: Concerning my undergraduate background and what I have exercised in laboratory, I plan to concentrate mainly on the following areas: Computational Mechanics, Structure Dynamics, Fracture Dynamics, Mechanics of Solids and Structure, Experimental Mechanics, and Continuum Mechanics. Also I have interest in Composite Materials and Biomechanics. I would like to accept any programs that fit for me. My Short-term and Long-term Plan: I want to pursue a Ph.D. in your esteemed institute at first, after that is accomplished, I will return to my motherland and use what I have learned in USA in my further research work. My long-term objective is to become an expert in my field and make all my efforts in contributing to my people. Signature:
